Astride the mouth of South Australia's St.Vincent and Spencer Gulfs lies Kangaroo Island. Its features bear English and French names, bestowed in the years 1802 and 1803 by Captains Matthew Flinders and Nicolas Baudin, the leaders of expeditions, dispatched by Great Britain's King George III and France's First Consul Napoleon Bonaparte to explore "carefully" the coast of New Holland. Since the island was uninhabited and had not been visited by aboriginals from the mainland, this was one of the very rare occasions when European discovery probably did not disregard existing native names.
